April General Meeting - The Mexican Tetra
About this event
The Mexican Tetra - Aquarium Oddity, Evolutionary Model Extraordinaire
The cave Mexican Tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) is a tempting addition to a community tank: a smaller fish with no eyes and iridescent pink skin, this fish has a unique aesthetic that has fascinated aquarists for decades. But where exactly did they originate, and how did they develop such unique features? In this talk, I will discuss what we know -- and still have yet to learn -- about this unique fish. I will start with the first documented description of this species in 1936, and end with their current legacy as both a beloved hobbyist's fish and an invaluable tool in evolutionary science. We will then break out into discussion of questions both from the audience about the natural history of this species, and from myself regarding the ways hobbyists might help inform scientists about this wonderful organism.

Maya Enriquez is a 3rd year PhD Student working in Dr. Suzanne McGaugh's Lab at the University of Minnesota. Originally from San Francisco, CA, her love of living things came from a childhood going to places like Golden Gate Park, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and even a family trip to the San Diego Zoo. Maya received her BA in Cognitive Science from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. While originally intent on pursuing a medical degree, her love for the natural world grew during her undergraduate years, where she studied in research labs covering topics such as migration in Northern Saw-Whet Owls and injury response in ZebraFinches. She received her MS from the University of Minnesota Duluth in Dr.Allen Mensinger's Lab studying the hearing system of fish before embarking on her work with cave fish. Her current research topic is mapping complex behavioral traits to underlying genetic architecture. In addition to maintaining the aquaculture system for her lab, she still enjoys being an aquarium hobbyist.
