About this event

Field to Fish Tank: Collecting and Keeping North American Native Fish

We will go over how I became enthusiastic about native fish and what sparked my interest in exploring the incredible diversity found right here at home. We'll discuss the process of collecting native fish, including important ethical and legal considerations to keep in mind while doing so. The remarkable biodiversity we have across North America will be showcased in this talk, then we'll turn our attention to examples of native fish found in Minnesota. The skills and tools will be explained to enable anyone to get started exploring native fish in their own backyard, offering practical recommendations for beginners and ideas on how to responsibly keep and display these incredible species to share their beauty and even their ecological importance with family and friends.

Growing up with parents who valued time outdoors and were involved in the floral and greenhouse industry fostered in me a lasting love for nature. As a kid, I kept many reptiles and amphibians as well as fish, and I spent countless hours at my local fish shop, TerreQuatics. As I moved into college, my interest in aquatic life—especially North American native fishes—evolved into a career as a fish biologist. Throughout that time, I continued keeping a variety of aquariums and species, but once I found more stability in my career, this passion expanded to a new level with the creation of a dedicated fish room of around twenty fish tanks and half of those being North American native species.
