About this event

Brackish water aquariums create an engaging and distinct environment for aquarists, providing an opportunity to explore the complexities of aquatic life in transitional habitats where freshwater and saltwater mix.  These aquariums support a rich variety of fish and invertebrate species that may not thrive in pure freshwater or marine settings. They host a diverse array of organisms that flourish in conditions between freshwater and saltwater.  By recreating the dynamic nature of estuarine environments, brackish water aquariums offer a unique aesthetic and ecosystem for hobbyists, enhancing the visual appeal of their aquatic displays.  Brackish aquariums serve as valuable educational tools, helping enthusiasts learn about the adaptations of organisms to varying salinity levels and the complexities of aquatic ecosystems. They provide insights into how species interact with their environments in different salinity conditions.  By carefully selecting species, maintaining water quality, and implementing effective filtration systems, hobbyists can navigate the challenges and rewards of managing successful brackish water aquariums.  Overall, brackish water aquariums present a rewarding opportunity for aquarists to explore unique species and foster a deeper understanding of aquatic environments.

Oscar Virgilio was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has lived in five different countries throughout his professional career. An aquarium enthusiast since the age of five, Oscar's passion for fish began with daily visits to the coast of the Rio de la Plata ecosystem. Over the years, he has successfully kept and raised both freshwater and marine fish, gaining extensive experience with South American Cichlids, particularly Discus and Angelfish.  His love for the hobby has led him on several trips to explore different regions of the Amazon and Manaus.  In the past 20 years, Oscar has also kept several exotic fish, such as Asian Arowana, Flowerhorns, and stingrays, resulting in visits to various farms in Indonesia and Thailand.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, he began researching and developing his expertise in brackish water aquariums, focusing on the specific biotopes for the past four years.

Oscar has taken on various roles in the aquarium community, including: Organizer of the First Canadian Flowerhorn Show in 2015. - Manager of MA ON Line Tropical Fish. - Moderator of the 2018 Asian Arowana Canada Club. - Founder of the UFA Canada Flowerhorn Group. - Distributor for Canada of SING and Feng Shui Arowanas Farms. - Administrator of several aquarium-related Facebook groups, including Arowana Fanatics Canada, Discus Fanatics Canada, Halton Aquarium Buy and Sale, and recently established Brackish Aquarium Canada.  Currently, he is focused on keeping and breeding various types of Discus and Angelfish, as well as maintaining both brackish and saltwater aquariums.
