Aqua soils have arguably been one of the greatest technological developments in the aquarium hobby over the past 30 years, beginning with the release of ADA Amazonia in 1996. Since then, dozens of comparable products have entered the market, helping hobbyists successfully establish and maintain planted aquariums.
However, based on both personal experience and analytical data, not all aqua soils perform the same. This presentation will compare the nutrient content, physical characteristics, and chemical properties of various aqua soils to help hobbyists better understand the commercial options available and make more informed decisions for their planted aquariums.
Travis has kept a high light intensity 180-gallon plant for roughly 10 years. In that time, he has replaced his aqua soil four times and has observed how different aqua perform initially and over time, sparking his interest in soil chemistry. He has automated most of the fertilization and CO2, requiring him to spend significant time trimming the greenery year round.
