About this event
An Overview of the Pencilfishes
A look at pencilfishes within the context of their family, Lebiasinidae. We’ll cover the speculation about the evolution of South American geology and how that likely influenced the speciation of pencilfishes. With a number of new pencilfishes being recently described, we’ll walk through the twenty different species currently recognized. After the break, I will propose an aquarist-centered approach to visually distinguishing the species.
Randy Carey has been keeping and focusing on characins for 30 years. In the late ‘90s he was befriended and informally mentored by Stan Weitzman of the Smithsonian Institution. In the 2000s he wrote a column, feature articles, and a book for Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine. Over 40 aquarium societies flew in Randy to present his programs, and Dr. Paul Loiselle recruited him to be the “tetra” expert for the Marineland Speaker Program. Having earned his club’s Lifetime award for his breeding accomplishments, he runs the BAP program for the Minnesota Aquarium Society. Currently, Randy maintains an aquaria studio of 100 tanks for breeding, experimentation, and observation of characins and cyprinids.
